چکیده

Temperature-depth recorders (TDRs) were attached to pelagic longline gear in the Hawaii-based commercial fishery to obtain actual fishing depths and to test the accuracy of catenary algorithms for predicting fishing depths. Swordfish gear was set shallow by typically deploying four hooks between successive floats. The observed depth of the settled deepest hook had a median value of 60 m for 333 swordfish sets. Tuna longline gear deployed more hooks between floats (mean = 26.8), and the observed median depth of the deepest hook was 248 m (n= 266 sets). Maximum gear depth was predicted from estimates of the longline sag ratio and catenary algorithms; however, depth was not predicted for a s s t o p a d e l t i P

Pelagic Longline Fishing Gear: A Brief History and Review of Research Efforts to Improve Selectivity

Pelagic longline gear had several independent evolutions, but the most widespread form appears to have been originally developed by the Japanese as early as the mid-19th century. Technological developments such as polyamide monofilament line and modern fishing vessel construction have resulted in the evolution and expansion of this gear type as the primary worldwide method of commercially harve...

Survival of white marlin ( Tetrapturus albidus ) released from commercial pelagic longline gear in the western North Atlantic

To estimate postrelease survival of white marlin (Tetrapturus albidus) caught incidentally in regular commercial pelagic longline fishing operations targeting swordfish and tunas, short-duration popup satellite archival tags (PSATs) were deployed on captured animals for periods of 5−43 days. Twenty (71.4%) of 28 tags transmitted data at the preprogrammed time, including one tag that separated f...

SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE THIRD REGULAR SESSION 13-24 August 2007 Honolulu, United States of America PRELIMINARY ESTIMATES OF HISTORICAL VARIATIONS IN THE FISHING POWER AND CATCHABILITY OF PELAGIC LONGLINE FISHING GEAR WCPFC-SC3-ME SWG/WP-7

I quantify the effects of 11 variables on the catchability of pelagic longlines, which are used to catch tunas and billfishes in the open ocean. Extension of the depth range and the duration of longline operations have reduced the catchability of several epipelagic species, such as mako sharks (Isurus spp.), since industrial longlining commenced in the tropical Pacific Ocean in the early 1950s....

Measuring the Length of a Pelagic Longline Set: Applications for Management

—Recent U.S. federal fisheries management actions aimed at reducing bycatch have established or proposed limits on the length of a pelagic longline set. However, such management measures are unenforceable if the criteria for measuring the length of a pelagic longline set have not been defined. Differences in the physical gear and deployment strategies suggest high variability among the several ...

Inferring the depth distribution of catchability for pelagic fishes and correcting for variations in the depth of longline fishing gear

We introduce a new method that uses generalized linear mixed models to infer the depth distribution of pelagic fishes. It uses existing data from research surveys and observers on commercial vessels to estimate changes in catchability when longline fishing gear is lengthened to access deeper water. We infer the depth distribution of catchability for 37 fish species that are caught on pelagic lo...
